The Bapst Brothers: Romain, Maurice and Jacques - whom we will also meet in A Peasant Chronicle in Gruyère (produced in 1990) - are peasants and carriers and work with their father. In autumn and winter, they bid for the community's wood, cut down the pine trees and bring down the logs through the snowy woods by horse-drawn sleigh, often waiting for a good snowfall to help the sledge glide easier on its difficult descent.
The brothers learned each gesture from their father or grandfather, who used to work in the time when sledges were guided down the steep slopes not by horses, but by men.
