The Living Forest

The Living Forest explains the food forest system in use in an area near the river Amônia; a consortium in which everyone participates to provide better food for the entire community. Using forest management, the Ashaninka Indians turn degraded land into a place for communal cultivation. Banana trees are grown for food and also as fertilizer for other crops, including plants that are used for building materials.

The video also shows how the Ashaninka are able to attract more wild game with the fruit that they grow, as well as keeping honeybees and turtles for food. By conducting studies of plants and animals they are continually finding ways to improve their system. Through communal, sustainable cultivation of the forest, these Indians protect their land and plan to feed themselves well into the future.

In 2001, the Ashaninka community of the river Amonia adopted a new system for the sustainable management of the tracajá, a type of river turtle that had become scarce due to over-consumption of its eggs and meat by whites and Indians. Turtle eggs are carefully transplanted and supervised; after hatching and being counted, the baby turtles are moved to a protected pool to grow. Some animals are kept for meat, while others are released in order to replenish the population. Happy at their program's success, the Ashaninka in the video are committed to preserving their resources.

Trainees for the Future features Ashanika strategies for forest management. The Apintxa village has been planting fruit and timber trees since 1989, and now the young children of the village are participating in the recuperation of degraded soil.

Learning how to make compost and to plant seedlings in their gardens, they will later teach others what they have learned. With a consortium of 146 species of trees, the Apintxa hope to cultivate a long-lasting abundance of fruit. "This is what wealth means to us," one of the teachers explains.
